The article is devoted to mechanisms of folklorisation of romanticism and based on studies of sentimental song which is one of the most famous genres of Mexican folklore. During reduction of the romantic style in its transition from professional poets to poets amateurs and folk masses series of interrelated processes of transformation occur. These processes include changes in emotional state of romantic poetry and translation of a specific minor romantic sentimental tear; “exoticizing” of folk oral lyric poetry; stereotyping of content and thematic impoverishment of poetry; cyclization of the content of romantic songs; the general impoverishment of imagery and the desire for declarative forms of expression; reinforcement of motifs through lexical and synonymous repetitions; crystallization of epithets. As shown, the essence of folklorisation is not borrowing of some texts but it is drastic revision of literary style that comes in two main areas: simplification (exaggeration) and stereotyping, i. e. creation of a system of stable artistic elements, without which any collective assimilation or collective representation of the texts couldn’t get possible. Thus the meaning of folklorisation lies in overcoming of the essential barrier between literature and folklore. Some results of the analysis are applicable to typologically similar phenomena of Latin American and European folklore, such as the Peruvian Moulis, Argentine tango, Russian urban romance.
