Body

In the first quarter of the twentieth century, the first collection of fairy tales dedicated to the folklore of Zaonezh’e appeared in Petrozavodsk. Zaonezh’e Folktales (Zaonezh’skie skazki, 1918) was compiled by the teacher P. O. Korennoi, based on texts performed by P. N. Korennaya, his mother. There is no information about this in the publication itself, but direct testimony comes from the edition of the fairy tales Korennaya recited in 1926, recorded by the folklorist I. V. Karnaukhova and published in the collection Fairy Tales and Legends of the Northern Region in 1934. Karnaukhova sharply criticized the editing of the 1918 collection, which she asserted had minimal scholarly value. We have been able to find correspondences between eleven texts in Fairy Tales and Legends and those in Zaonezh’e Folktales and offer a corrective to Karnaukhova’s overly critical position. The 1918 collection still has a certain scientific value, since it is devoted to the repertoire of a single performer who recited mainly cumulative tales aimed at a children’s audience. The article presents a textual comparison of variants from the two collections that also has some interest as an example of repeated performances made by one bearer of the folklore tradition
