The article is devoted to the tradition of gathering edible wild plants, berries and mushrooms to improve food allowance of the rural population in the Russian North. The sources showed that in 19th — early 20th c. the gathering was a great help in the traditional food ration and made up the deficiency of vitamins. The role of natural vegetable resources was especially great during the years of bad harvest, starvation and other extreme situations.
