Body

The victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 was achieved thanks to the highest tension of physical and spiritual forces of battles’ participants and home front workers. Among the memoires of the wartime, narrated at the territory of Udmurtia, we distinguish between stories of soldiers, workers of defense industry plants and rural workers.

Recurrent theme of the oral biographic stories about the wartime, that are narrated by informants of war-time and post-war generation of the villages is the exhausting work, that was due to the lack of men left for the battlefield, conducted by aged people, women and children in order to implement plans of bread and other agricultural products production, to fulfil the labor duty on construction of the railroad and tree felling.

The original form of Udmurt oral biographic stories is a genre of musical song tradition. Northern Udmurts perform improvisation songs in which stories about their life are revealed within the framework of a given melody, usually “sad”. Dramatic events of private life (hunger, ruin, death, orphanage) and emotional state at the moment of performance form the basis of improvisation songs. There among the southern Udmurts songs, that are personal in their essence, certain were performed according to ritual tradition of “seeing off”. Reference to farewell songs as to “personalized” gives a chance to restore an emotional picture of farewell (joining the army, leaving for the battlefield) and to draw an acoustic portrait of the performer. This type of songs is performed commonly within the context of the oral story reminiscence.
