The study was carried out under the financial program of strategic academic leadership “Priority‑2030,” as part of the implementation of the scientific topic FZMU‑2022–0008, reg. number 1022052600017–6. The authors thank N. N. Laletina for her help in reconstructing the toponymic realities of Harbin in the first half of the twentieth century.
This article analyzes two versions of a story about “Harbin grandfathers” — a kind of cultural hero, “passionaries” in L. N. Gumilev’s theory — as part of the Chinese version of the “Harbin text” of urban folklore from the first half of the twentieth century. Told in different communicative situations by one informant, these oral histories, while retaining the “plot of a futile treasure,” may have different semantic accents and take on different generic forms. In the “Russian communicative situation” the memorate in Chinese with elements of legend presents the theme of “grandfather’s work for a Russian merchant,” “grandfather’s acquisition of wealth,” “the loss of (Russian) family wealth,” and “the beginning of the Chinese history of Harbin proper.” In the “Chinese situation” of the narrative, after the passage of time our informant supplemented the story of the legendary “Harbin grandfathers” with current motifs from Chinese cultural consciousness: “Breakthrough to Guangdong”; “grandfather’s work for General Horvat”; and the righteousness of the family elder and his uniqueness (high intellect, good looks, knowledge of the Russian language). At the same time, the memorate turned into a legendary plot about the Chinese development of the Northeast and Harbin by Han passionaries. Despite the Chinese ethno-cultural paradigm, the analyzed plot is organically inscribed in the “Harbin text” of non-fabulous prose, and represents the theme of the frontier and mythologizing as basic elements of the urban folklore of Harbin.
