Body

The paper deals with studying of the Russian folklore modes. The problem of scale classification is conterminous between ethnomusicology and theory of music in musicology studies. Ethnomusicology methods make it possible to reveal relations between processes of mode production and ritual sources of the folk intoning and genre preferences within regional traditions. Methods of theory of music promote systematization of mode classification types in folk songs and to help characterize their position in the entire development of pitch structure in Christian cultures. There in the paper we touch upon problems of classification of tone rows, methodology of its analysis, terminology. The author investigates the functional organization of song polyphony exemplified in oral songs recorded in the South of Russia from different generations of singers.
