Materials recorded during recent years allow to suggest existence of a group of people for whom a fairy tale’s text has become an instrument for reflection about the past of own family, the role of tradition in human life and society, and in some cases — to establish relationship with the homeland. The article deals with the role of stories in the repertoire of Martha Fedorovna Zaytseva from community of OldBelievers “with chapels”. Currently, she, her husband, many children and grandchildren live in Argentina. She learned tales from her father, but she does not tell them to minor children, and they are not involved in her active repertoire. While telling a tale to a collector she does not recount them so much, but rather talks about her own reactions and attitudes to the fabulous texts heard by her from her father in childhood. Emotional attitude to the plot, fear and joy, which were caused by very these two fairy tales, told by the woman’s father, apparently, made it possible not just to memorize the texts but to capture into own memory professional techniques inherent for master of telling of fairy tales. Tales have become a kind of reflection mechanism that allows to recall the past, the family tradition, beloved father, etc. Martha Fedorovna can not only tell the story but also perform it very artistically retaining details and techniques that most likely have been used by her father while telling tales in the evening to his daughters.
