Body

This article analyzes the history of fieldwork in Karelia on Russian folklore. It is based on materials dating from 1970 to 2000 from the folklore archive of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. These include audio and handwritten materials collected by employees of the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the KarSC RAS; work by students of Petrozavodsk State University and Karelian State Pedagogical Institute; and material received from local historians. During the period under review, there was a significant broadening of the field of folklore, including the incorporation of ethnographic and urbanstudies elements. The author demonstrates how the collection of folklore improved by using new techniques, especially relating to the video recording of folklore. The method of interviewing grew in popularity, while issues of copyright in relation to both informant and collector became more complicated. The author suggests that archival materials reflect not only the state of tradition and changes in collectors’ methods, but also the impact of historical, cultural and technological transformations on the development of folklore, both local and nation-wide.
