This paper examines the history of recording of Russian fairy tales with plots of 425 M type (Grass-Snake as a Husband (Bathing Girl’s Garment Kept until her Promise of Marriage)). The author notes that texts published in various Russian collections, that have been marked as being of 425 M type, do not always correspond with summaries of this type from recognized indexes, but in fact belong to some other fairytale type often. In addition to tales of 425 M type, that are included into classic editions of folklore collections, the author treats other texts of the type, that are published in regional sources as well as texts from archival collections. Identifying of different variants of the plot helps to enlarge our knowledge of its spread on the territory of Russia, not only to clarify the structure of the plot type and to identify the characteristics and specifics of Russian fairytale variants. The variants in discussion prove that the type 425 M is not rare in Russian fairytale tradition. Grass-snake husband is known in Russian territory both in the areas of influence of Balts, in the border Balto-Slavic areas, and in other Russian regions.
