Body

The article deals with the process of recording and publication of less studied texts about Acamaz in Ossetian Nartiade. Historiographic review reveals that texts from this cycle were written down during the very beginning of the collecting of Ossetian Narta legends. Since 1876 to the middle of 20th century, tales about Acamaz were collected by the first Ossetian intellectuals, such as G. Shanaev, M. Tuganov, M. Gardanov, G. Dzagurov, A. Khamicaev, D. Begizov etc. Focusing on the characteristics of published and hand-written sources, the author concludes that tales about Acamaz existed in two dialects of Ossetian language: Iron and Digor. There in the Acamaz's cycle two plots were the most popular. One plot about Nasran-aldar tells of Acamaz's bellicosity, whereas the wedding plot presents the main hero as a supernatural musician. Ossetian texts with their translation in Russian, Slovak, Hungarian, English, French, German, and Georgian are observed in chronological sequence. The article contains a list of the main scholarly editions, which published legends about Acamaz for the first time. Publication of the entire book of Acamaz's cycle in Ossetian language, has been an important event, that gives new horizons for the studies of this complex image.
