The folk tune “Sormach” has a central place in the instrumental folk tradition of This article examines the variants of the Nizhny Novgorod region and has been well studied. This article examines the variants of its instrumental form as recorded by expeditions of the Moscow Conservatory in the Nizhny Novgorod region from the 1960s to the present day. The characteristic features of “Sormach” are analyzed: its structure, harmonic basis, and the correspondence between singing and instrumental accompaniment. The problem of type and variant is discussed, based on an examination of local versions of the tune. The folk names for this type of music, practiced in the vast territory of the Volga region and beyond, are published for the first time.
