This study examines ethnic elements in contemporary watercolor art, based on works presented at “The Spirit of Watercolor” festival in Varna, Bulgaria (2019 and 2022), along with material from their catalogues. Ethnic motifs are common in modern painting, sculpture, and applied arts by both professional and folk artists contributing to their exploration of national identity and cultural uniqueness. These motifs help preserve ethnic identity and traditional values, appearing mainly in book illustrations and genres such as portrait, landscape, and still life. Watercolor artworks frequently depict national clothing, jewelry, ornaments, architecture, and household items, illustrating the relevance and realistic portrayal of ethnicity in modern watercolor art.
