This article examines modern ethnic holidays in the space of the multinational city of Samara. Typological features, substantive and functional characteristics of the city’s holidays are analyzed based celebrations of the Tatar Sabantuy, the Chuvash Kor sari, Armenian Terendez and Korean Sollyal. The article considers the factors that determine the holidays’ format, spatial, temporal, actional, attributive, ideological and substantive features; and offers comparative analysis. It argues that by the beginning of the twenty-first century these factors have undergone transformation. The temporal parameters of the holidays under consideration — elements of ritual and symbolic nature, as well as spectacular events (games, competitions, songs, and dances) — are relatively stable, thanks to which holiday rituals have turned into mass displays (the Kӗr sări, Sollal). Changes in the holidays were a consequence of their adaptation to the urban environment and mass culture, which gave rise to innovations in the organization of space and in the format of the event; emphasis shifted to their communicative, emotional, psychological, and aesthetic functions. To one degree or other holidays contribute to communities’ consolidation; unlike the Armenian Terendez, aimed exclusively at intra-ethnic communication, other holidays demonstrate communities’ desire to integrate into Samara’s multi-ethnic space. Sollyal is an example of the consolidation of urban dwellers who are lovers of Korean culture. Terendez has preserved the atmosphere of a ritual holiday. At the same time, elements of folk and professional culture, such as costume, food, decorative and applied art items, branded goods, songs, and dances, are widely represented and perform an important symbolic function, filling the space of the holiday with ethnic content, influencing the formation and maintenance of the ethnic identity of its members. Key words: ethnic holiday, Kӗr sări, Sabantuy, Sollyal, Terendez
