The study was carried out within the framework of RFS project No. 23‑18-00478, “Russian Mongolia. A Comprehensive Study of Culture in a Non-Ethnic Environment (Folklore, Ritual Traditions, Language)”.
This article considers the ethnocultural identity the Russian community in Mongolia, which is characterized by the completeness of identificatory features as well as by the presence of various strategies of socio-cultural positioning that are due to external factors. It discusses the fact that the descendants of longtime Russian residents of Transbaikalia who live in Mongolia on a permanent basis identify themselves as Russian despite the presence of other Slavic, Asian, and mestizo phenotypes. Their diverse socio-cultural positioning practices used for cultural identification reflect the subjective, inner world of man in Mongolia’s cultural space. Analysis of their narratives shows that these practices are aimed at preserving a basic identity based on the values of Russian culture. It establishes that the complex structure of the cultural identity of Russians in Mongolia is based both on its strict separation from other worldviews and on the acceptance of other norms, styles, and lifestyles, within certain limits. The external factors influencing the cultural identification of the Russian community of Mongolia are a synthesis of the ways of self-identification, cultural diffusion and borrowing that are available and sanctioned by the dominant society, and reflect the nature of the Russians’ relationship with the culture of that society
