This paper was prepared according to the state order of Federal Agency of Russian Scientific Organizations on carrying out fundamental research on the theme “Historical and cultural heritage of the peoples of the South of Russia in the conditions of modernization” (0260–2014–0006).

Body

The paper discusses traditional concepts of death, which are reflected in the dialect vocabulary, speech patterns, clichéd lyrics and arbitrary judgments of the Nekrasov Cossacks. Contemporary field materials of the expeditions of the Southern scientific center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Southern Federal University are used. The material allows us to divide the concept of death into a number of classical definitions: the image of death, the allocation of its area in perceived space, the predictability of death and its nature, signs of approaching death, the understanding of the transition from life to death, etc. The synthesis of submissions shows that the idea of the death among the Nekrasov Cossacks is rather typical of the Eastern Slavs, especially Russians and especially the representatives of the Old- Believers unions. Preservation of archaic images is distinctly specific of the oral tradition of the Nekrasov Cossacks. We have recorded a number of phenomena, caused by the peculiarities of historical destiny of the Nekrasov community. However, they are not significant for the corpus of materials. We can conclude that this area of spiritual culture remains inaccessible to transformation processes, but it is not protected from reduction and partial update.
