This article examines various publications on folklore and ethnography by D. K. Zelenin (1878–1954), focusing on his reviews. Zelenin was a renowned ethnographer, folklorist, and dialectologist in the late 1890s and early 1900s. He actively collaborated with the local newspaper Vyatka Provincial Gazette, and also published in the journals Life, Historical Bulletin, Living Antiquity, and Ethnographic Review, both as a student and after graduating from university. In his early reviews, Zelenin highlighted important trends in ethnic and cultural processes and in the development of folklore genres. He also explored religious issues related to the missionary activities of the Orthodox Church among peoples such as the Votiaks and Cheremis. The young scientist not only acknowledged the merits of the publications he reviewed but also critically assessed their shortcomings. Zelenin’s reviews showcase his broad scientific outlook, deep knowledge of the historical context, and his own distinct style of presenting material. Stylistically, his articles and reviews not only emphasize analysis but also incorporate vivid descriptions of phenomena.
