Body

The oral literature of the Lezgins is characterized by folk imagery and an allegorical-symbolic way of artistic thinking. As of the present time, zoomorphic images in Lezgin proverbs and sayings have not been fully studied, although these works are saturated with zoomorphic images that allow researchers access to various cultural codes. In this article, the author tries to define the specific features of these images. Animal imagery in Lezgin proverbs and sayings occurs in the form of symbols, allegories, personifications, likenesses, and comparisons, etc. The animals depicted include wild and domestic animals, birds, reptiles, insects, amphibians and fish. The author also found images of epic and mythological animals in Lezgin paremias. She demonstrates that these works often express moral teachings and give veiled instruction through the use of figurative language, and zoomorphic image-symbols are part of their poetics. Through the prism of zoomorphic imagery, Lezgin aphoristic works interpret the actions of various social groups and reveal historical, social and moral problems of the era.
