This article was written under the scholarly supervision of folklorist Inna Sergeevna Veselova, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of the History of Russian Literature, St. Petersburg State University.

Body

This article examines the space of the river in the system of internal and external communications of the Northern Russian village of Soyana in the Mezen district of the Arkhangelsk region; it also considers the influence of water space on male socialization and the inclusion of the river in the structure of the axiological coordinates of the village. It is based on field materials from St. Petersburg State University folklore and anthropological expeditions of 2021 and 2022. This included interviews about boats, the river, and fishing with men aged 39 to 82 years. The author pays attention to the manufacturing technologies of vernacular watercraft, considering the features of various types of vessels on the territories of different rivers of the Mezen district. He points to their high differentiation due to differences in geographical conditions, which indicates a high degree of development. The article shows how the river forms communities of fishermen and boat makers around itself. Taking part in river boats mark the main stages of male socialization in riverine space, which span the formative period of childhood to the master’s posthumous fame. Cooperation takes place based on joint practices that form a fund of local practical knowledge and collective memory of the local population. Attention to the disappearing traditions associated with interaction with the river allows us to reveal various cultural facts that unite the village community. As a result of semiotic and axiological analysis of the material, it has been possible to identify the main aspects of the influence of river space on the social and economic structure of the village society of the European north of Russia.
