This article was prepared as a part of the project “National Museum in Arctic Karelia: Development Prospects in the Digital Age”, implemented under the program R&D to support research and development activities of students and graduate students of Petrozavodsk State University, financed by the Government of the Republic of Karelia.

Body

The Investigative Laboratory of the Local and Microhistory of Karelia at Petrozavodsk State University (ILLMIK PetrGU) has been working with rural museums in the Republic of Karelia since 2013. During this time the laboratory has organized at least ten student expeditions to the northern regions of Karelia (Belomorsky, Kalevsky, Kemsky). The main task of these expeditions is to create electronic catalogs of local museums. The importance of this work is due to the relatively low level of study of the local history of the Karelian Arctic. ILLMIK created a special database for registering information about museum exhibits. This made it possible to inventory and systematize the exhibits and to strengthen the connection between the tangible cultural heritage represented by the museum exhibits and the intangible culture expressed in folkloric genres. This project also allowed Petrozavodsk University students to actively engage in the study of the region’s local history and traditional culture on a systematic level. Certainly, long-term cooperation with the region’s rural museums revealed several problems. One of them is the lack of research on the history of the region’s settlements, which causes difficulty in describing exhibits. This suggests the need to organize a large-scale program of local and micro-historical research on the history of settlements that were part of the old Karelian village structure.
