The purpose of the article is to analyse the functions, semantics and the symbolism of Chuvashes children’s clothes on the basis of different sources analysis. Children’s traditional costume copied many elements of the adults’ clothes. Until the fiveyear age children’s clothes had almost no differences by sex, except for headgear. There were many ceremonies dedicated to the first use of the shirt, aimed at successful growth of the child.
