This article considers the work of the outstanding researcher of the musical culture of the peoples of Siberia and the Far East, Prof. Yuri Ilyich Sheikin, Doctor of Art History, founder of the Siberian school of ethnomusicology, which studies the traditions of indigenous peoples. During half a century of scientific activity, Sheikin, took part in more than one hundred musical-ethnographic expeditions to various regions of Siberia and the Far East, and compiled a representative collection of audio recordings and musical instruments. The first period of Sheikin’s research and teaching activities (1966 — 1983) is associated with his work at the Far Eastern Pedagogical Institute of Arts in Vladivostok; the second (1983–1993) covers his time at the Novosibirsk State Conservatory named for M. I. Glinka; and the third (1993–2023) is connected with the establishment and development of the Arctic State Institute of Culture and Arts in Yakutsk. Students and followers of Prof. Sheikin conduct scholarly research and teach in various regions of the country and beyond.
