Body

This article analyzes the structure and composition of the quadrilles of Russianspeaking villages in the southern part of the Chelyabinsk region. They are typologically related to the “French Quadrille”; their appearance and distribution in Russia corresponded to the trends of the time, and the fundamental incompleteness of their composition created conditions for the assimilation of elements from the already established tradition of Russian choreography. The fashionable form set genre boundaries and at the same time offered opportunities for development, which explains the wide distribution of the quadrille in the peasant environment. The article presents an invariant model for the quadrilles that makes it possible to see the integral content of their composition and the elements of their structure and organization. This also allows us to identify structural units (formulas) embedded in the formation of short dance fragments or figures. These structural units determine the choice of expressive means and makes it possible to correlate differences among the variant figural schemes, helping us to see the local specificity of variant quadrilles within the dance traditions of the given territory. This analysis leads to the conclusion that the two-pair square dance form from the southern part of the Chelyabinsk region features laconism in its organization of patterns. The article also comments on the everyday life of these quadrilles.
