The article describes the changes of traditional belts role in the culture of Old Believers Lipovans during 20th c. Despite the fact that this group of Russian people has lived on the territory of Romania and Ukraine since 18th c. they saved a lot of the Russian traditions. Like other Russian Old Believers groups lipovans of Romania know two kinds of belts. The first one is a weaved band that is tied over clothing and the second is a narrow stripe or string that is tied over the naked body and called ‘telnik’. Although in local tradition pe ople suppose that it is a religious obligation to wear a crucifix and a belt the real role of the latter element of the lipovans’ traditional costume transformed by the turn of 21th c. Nowadays the first kind of belts is still an obligatory part of ‘the church costume’ and the second one turned into an occasional amulet.
