Body

The paper gives a brief history of Orthodoxy in Uganda in the 20th century. Orthodoxy appeared in this country in the 1920-1930s due to missionary activities of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria, as well as interest in Orthodoxy, spread among young Ugandan Anglican Christians. The author illuminates situation, when several Orthodox Ugandans have experienced importance of affiliation with Russian Orthodox Old Belief Church, which does not exercise ecumenical promotion. The paper describes contacts between the Russian Orthodox Old Belief Church and new parishes in Uganda as well as support, provided by Russian Old-Believers to their African adherents. Uprisal of new parishes in Uganda has caused to the ROOB Church a number of important challenges, related with liturgy order in Ugandan churches, translation of liturgy texts to the native language etc. The author suggests necessity to enlist philologist scholars, who might help to resolve discrepancies. He considers, that during field expeditions Africanists might visit OldBelievers’ parishes in Uganda and thus contribute to the study of influence of Russian Orthodoxy on the whole and especially of the Old Belief on the religious life of Uganda. First steps of the Ugandan Old Belief, but they seem promising, that it will play an important role in the spiritual life of Uganda and in consolidation of friendship between this country and Russia.
