Body

The article is devoted to the scholarly work of Nina Ivanovna Savushkina, DSc of Philology, Professor of M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University, who would have turned 90 this year. Her research interests in folklore were diverse, but in this article attention is focused on the scholar’s contribution to the study of folk entertainment and gaming culture. N. I. Savushkina was active in collecting. She recorded a large array of texts of folk drama and evidence of its existence in various regions of Russia, including those where this tradition had not previously been attested. Texts that she identifi ed in the archives and in various 19th —  20th century publications greatly enriched the corpus. Thanks to Nina Ivanovna’s active publication activities, voluminous material on Russian folk theatre and entertainment-gaming culture was introduced into broad scholarly circulation. Her research eff orts were aimed at understanding the nature of folk drama and its place in culture; identifying the structure of folk theatrical tradition; analyzing the poetics of dramatic works; and developing terminology for the study of the folk theatrical tradition. Savushkina’s works are distinguished by scrupulous textual analysis and the consideration of broad cultural contexts.
