Nikolay M. Lopatin made a significant contribution into the collection and the study of Russian folklore. He became wellknown mainly because of the joint publication with V. Prokunin of “Collection of Russian Lyric songs…” (1889). The aim of the article is to add some new strokes to the portrait of N. Lopatin as a collector, researcher, and a singer. The article is based on the archival materials from Lopatins’ family archive, The Russian State Archive of Literature and Art (RGALI), The State Historical Museum (GIM) and others.
