Body

The article is devoted to musical instruments in Ossetian Nart epos and to the flute, owned by Acamaz the hero, particularly. The author compares this flute with cognate musical instruments, known among other peoples. Acamaz’s flute both provides aesthetic pleasure and is used as a shepherd’s instrument in Ossetian sagas. The flute is magic because it’s made of gold and gold indicates its unearthly origin. The majority of texts tell us that the Nart heroes have received their magic flute from a deity called Æfsati and even from the Supreme God. That’s why Acamaz acts as a mediator between people and the sacred world in Ossetian Nart epos.
