The most popular counting rhyme of children of Armenia, “Ala-bala-nitsa”, is of Bulgarian origin. The article deals with Armenian variants of the text, the time and ways of its intrusion into Armenia, cognate counting rhymes of Eastern Europe, the origin of the expression “ala-bala”, and its occurrence in other traditions.
