Body

This article is devoted to the problem of formulaic melodies in a regional tradition, in this case, to modal patterns in the songs of the Evenki of Yakutia.  It examines Evenki song traditions of three areas of Yakutia (the Aldan, Olekminsky, and Oleneksky districts [ulusy]). The article notes the predominant harmonic structures and reveals the interval relationships among them in Evenk lyrical songs, lullabies and ritual melodies. A comparative study of the melodies reveals features characteristic of certain local groups: the songs of the Aldan and Olekminsky Evenki are based on an angemythonic tetrachord in the volume of pure quinta with the interval structure 3–2–2; the songs of the Olenek Evenki are based are on a dichord (in the volume of second or tertia) or on trichordal harmonies in the volume of tertia with the interval structure 2–2; in the melodies of the Aldan and Olekminsky Evenki, there is a harmonic complex of three abutments consisting of a small-thumb and a large-thumb interval ratio (less often, two abutments in a fifth ratio).
