The article deals with the changes that have occurred with the men’s tradition of fairy tales telling. The analysis of the material shows that in the XIX century men prevailed among the storytellers. Their performing style was characterized by improvisation within the framework of the fabulous canon, and some performers went further beyond the boundaries prescribed by the genre and created their own texts, often very far from the fabulous standard. Such performing style was aimed at entertainment of a wide audience, mostly adults and often only males, which fact determined a special style of performance, including attention to detail, a kind of novelization of the fairy tale and adding details from common everyday life, attention to the psychology of the characters, etc. The core of the repertoire of these storytellers conveyed the local tradition, although there were men who included elements from other regional traditions or from books into their repertoire. At present, there are much fewer men-storytellers. A variety of storytellers telling fairy tales from the stage have emerged. Their repertoire is heterogeneous in its origin, its sources are largely, on the one hand, books, films, radio and television productions, and, on the other hand, archival and expeditionary records, scientific publications of fairy tales. Then, for many carriers of a traditional fairy tale the very purpose of performing changed. The fairy tale in this case becomes a mean of self-identification, a mean of asserting the belonging of oneself and one’s audience to a certain ethno-sociocultural group and tradition.
