Russian folklorist Neonila Artyomovna Krinichnaya, who dedicated many years to studying historical prose and mythology, would have turned 85 on November 22, 2023. This article covers the early years of the renowned researcher’s professional career, which involved active collecting, often carried out together with her husband, the writer V. I. Pulkin. The Russian North became the favorite destination for their expeditions; it was here that Krinichnaya recorded numerous legends which later became source material for various collective scholarly volumes, articles, and monographs. The collector also focused on family histories from Zaonezh’e; in particular, she was fortunate to get interesting material from M. F. Kovalenko, granddaughter of I. G. Ryabinin-Andreev. Krinichnaya was also interested in the traditional culture of the indigenous Karelians, and she was dedicated to preserving their mythological prose and beliefs. All of her expeditionary materials are stored in the Folklore Section of the Scientific Archives of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (KarRC RAS) and in the Audio Records Archive of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History (also in the Karelian Research Centre archive). This article publishes Krinichnaya’s reports (otchety) of her expeditions for the first time, expeditions that had a great impact on Krinichnaya as a folklorist, impelling her to understand texts in their cultural context.
