From the XVIII century up to our days, materials on tools and questionnaires on the peoples of the Volga region can be seen in various sources: publications in historical and ethnographic journals, local periodicals, and individual publications. The modern stage of ethnology, folkloristics and dialectology is characterized by the presence of several topical methodological paradigms: structural-semiotic, historical-cultural, hermeneutic, ethno-psycho-linguistic. Each methodology, in particular tools and questionnaires that reflect aspects of this methodology, presupposes a special approach to the material that needs to be identified, documented and analyzed. The article presents the main trends in the development of tools and questionnaires for fixing ethnic markers of the peoples of the Volga region from the XVIII to early XX centuries. Keywords
