This article is devoted to the peculiarities of the ethnocultural development of the Terek Cossacks in the second half of the nineteenth – first quarter of the twentieth centuries. The author concludes that it was at this time that the formation and development of Terek Cossack identity as a Russian subethnic group in the Central and North-Eastern Caucasus took place. The creation of the Terek Cossack army; the consolidation of Terek Cossack ethnic processes; their diffusion in Russian traditional culture; the formation of a single ethnocultural space within the military territory; and the efforts of the Cossack intelligentsia to uphold the traditions of self-government and spiritual identity; all contributed to the emergence of a developed selfawareness, expressed in the self-naming of the group as “Tertsy” and “Terek Cossacks.” Since the Terek Cossacks were both part of the Russian ethnos and at the same time possessed unique ethnocultural characteristics — a developed system of values, and a rich historical past - their self-awareness was of a dual nature. Its political, national and local subethnic components changed and developed during the subsequent years of wars, revolutions, and social experiments
