This article surveys the many-sided activities of the Department of Musical Folklore of Moscow Conservatory as it was first organized in 1940–1942 under the leadership of N. Bryusova. It is based on archival materials and gives a brief description of the general state of Russian historical science on the eve of the department’s creation. The article describes Bryusova’s efforts to create both a National Music Institute as an all-Union Scientific Center as well as the Moscow Conservatory’s Department of Musical Folklore. It outlines the goals and objectives of the new department, and its admission requirements, student population, staff of teachers, terms of study, curricula, and disciplines are discussed. A section of the article is devoted to the activities of the department during the Great Patriotic War, when the Conservatory was evacuated to Saratov. Based on the surviving minutes of departmental meetings, its various activities are described, such as: the discussion of historical and theoretical problems of musical folklore; demonstrations of musical and ethnographic material recorded during field work; and drawing up plans for upcoming expeditions. The Department of Musical Folklore emerges as a very important link in the history of Russian ethnomusicology and its organizational and structural development.
