Local oral tradition quite often includes the elements, which are not absolutely comprehended by local community. These elements (images, situations) remain on the periphery of local narrative tradition for some time. Further they can get the stable status in oral repertoire. If it doesn’t occur, they will be forgotten in a short time. This article considers stories about Mother Maria from this point of view. All these narratives were written from the inhabitants of Korzhevka village (Inza district, Ulyanovsk region). The problem is that the status of Mother Maria is not defined in this tradition. The comparison of different stories shows variations of the character’s characteristics (the real person — Christian saint — the mythological character).
