The article was prepared within the framework of the RFBR project No. 20-012-00057 "A. P. Berger (1828-1886) - an outstanding Russian kavkazologist of the second half of the XIX-th century".
This article analyzes the work of the outstanding Russian scholar of the Caucasus, the
archaeologist Adolf Petrovich Berger [Bergé, Berzhe] (1828–1886). It describes three studies by Berger that were devoted to the population of the Caucasus: Mountain Tribes in the Caucasus (1858), An Ethnographic Review of the Caucasus (1879), and Mountain Tribes of the Caucasus (1883), which for the first time presented a fairly brief, but at the same time strictly scientific description of the historical destinies, ethnography, and religious beliefs of the peoples of the Caucasus. Berger’s deep knowledge of works of ancient, Eastern, European and Russian authors, combined with his own scholarly research, allowed the scientist to produce studies that have not only not lost their significance in the 150 years since their publication, but have acquired special value in the modern context.
