This article examines the fairy tale tradition of the Poshekhonsky district of the Yaroslavl region. The materials of this one local tradition, recorded from the second half of the nineteenth to the beginning of the twenty-first century, show that during this period the plot composition of fairy tales changed. While throughout most of the twentieth century, collectors monitored primarily magical tales and anecdotes about Poshekhontsy, today novelistic tales and anecdotes predominate, most of widespread plot types. At the same time, it is impossible not to note the presence of plots that are rare for the larger Russian tradition, and that improvisation within the framework of the fairy tale canon is popular among performers
